In this Debate for Democracy platform, I served as one of the judges alongside academics and rights activists. Teams played the roles of government and opposition in a mock parliament, debating how effectively Bangladesh is safeguarding consumer rights, from safe food and fair pricing to grievance redress and market monitoring. My role was to evaluate how well they used data, laws and real-life examples in their speeches. Listening to a full hall of young debaters passionately defend consumer rights reminded me how central these issues are to my own reporting on development and the economy.
