Water aid fellowship 2020–2021

Young Media Fellowship on WASH 2020–2021 (Supported by Water Aid Bangladesh)

I was honored to be selected as one of only thirteen journalists across Bangladesh for the Young Media Fellowship on WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) 2020–2021, supported by WaterAid Bangladesh. This highly competitive and prestigious fellowship was designed to strengthen the capacity of young journalists to report effectively on WASH-related issues, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fellowship, held from November 2020 to February 2021, provided an exclusive opportunity for professional development, field research, and in-depth reporting on critical sanitation and
public health challenges. Throughout the program, I participated in a series of knowledge-sharing workshops, mentorship sessions, and on-site reporting visits to Saidpur, Gaibandha, and Rangpur, gaining firsthand insight into Bangladesh’s diverse WASH landscape.

During these field visits, I observed fecal sludge and waste management operations, FSM (Fecal Sludge Management) plants, healthcare facilities, community-based sanitation projects, and school WASH programs. I engaged directly with adolescent students, school committees, teachers, local administrations, and community leaders to understand their challenges and perspectives on sanitation, hygiene, and health equity.

As part of the fellowship, I produced a series of investigative and human-interest reports focused on the impact of COVID-19 on hygiene behavior, sanitation access, and waste management in underserved communities. My stories were broadcast through my media network and appreciated by both WaterAid Bangladesh and senior mentors for their depth, accuracy, and advocacy value in raising awareness of WASH and public health issues.

Receiving this fellowship was a significant recognition of my dedication to social-impact journalism, particularly in the areas of public health communication and sustainable development. It reinforced my professional credibility as a journalist who consistently uses media to advance community wellbeing, influence public discourse, and advocate for inclusive policies.
